CONGRATULATIONS to Toko Primary School 2011 McLeod Shield WINNERS!

This sheild was first presented in 1920, and was played for between schools or groups of schools with a combined roll of 200 or less. Originally a knockout competition to find the North and South finalists, the shield then went on to be competed for by a round robin tournament played in zones. Each of the four zones contributed a winner who then played a knockout series to find the finalists. The teams were ten a side with a 54 kg weight limit and the boys played in barefeet.  Now days the shield is still played for by 10 aside teams in barefeet but for children under the weight of 60kg.  This competition was and still is extremely popular amongst the many country schools who participate.

Linkhorn Cup

CONGRATULATIONS to Inglewood Primary School 2011 Linkhorn Cup WINNERS!

The Linkhorn Cup was originaly presented to the South Taranaki Primary Schools in 1926 for competition amongst schools with a roll of over 200. This was widened to include invited northern sides in the late 1960s. In the upcoming years the larger primary schools such as Stratford, Eltham and Opunake won the trophy on many occasions. With schools such as Bell Block and Inglewood then begining to play every year, an interesting competition developed. The cup was then competed for on a knockout basis playing 15 a side with players in boots and with a maximum weight of 56kg.  Currently the Linkhorn Cup is still played as a 15 aside competition with boots but the weight of children participating is now under 60kg.  Entries are invited from all schools in Taranaki with a roll of 280 pupils and above as at entry close off date.

General points to consider for this competition are as follows:

  • Schools are encouraged to play other sports as an inter school exchange
